Department:

Within Data & Analytics department (D&A) we need a strong center of excellence for data and data analytics, which are the driving force behind a data-driven culture, data governance & quality frameworks, our BI function and the close connection with IT on a future-proof data infrastructure. 

The DSEL team (Data Science and Engineering Lab) is a team of data scientists and data engineers within D&A, whose primary purpose is to help Schiphol become the world’s best digital airport by building data products and services based on machine learning models and robust data engineering.  

What will you do as a Senior Data Engineer? 

As a Data Engineer at one of the world's premier airports you will help us build this production grade cloud environment.
  • You will work together with architects, data scientists and business owners to build and manage data solutions atop our cloud data lake and analytics environment.
  • You'll be responsible for the design, implementation, test and maintenance of data products on Microsoft Azure.
  • You will work closely together with various (internal) business stakeholders and data scientists.
  • You see yourself as a senior engineer, with extensive programming experience, and have the willingness to help other engineers and take the ownership of the project.
Your main activities will be:
  • Identify technical needs of the AI team;
  • Improve software development lifecycle
  • Design, implement and test cloud based (Azure) data intensive applications;
  • Convert data product prototypes to data products.
  • Collaborate with other Senior Engineers and Data Architects to provide optimal technical solutions
 About the teams & projects:

As Senior Engineer you’ll be member of our scrum team which consists of engineers, data scientists and a product owner. In total the DSEL team consists of 20 people, of which 6 are data engineers. You should expect to work on development, testing and improvement of data-pipelines related to some of Schiphol’s major AI models. Some examples include:  
  • A deep-learning based event-detection system that processes camera images to give us insight into what is going on in the turnaround process. 
  • A system that predict passenger flows through the terminal for the coming hours using a network of sensors measuring the current flow and flight events. 
  • Realtime routing of busses on the airfield using tracking data of these busses. 
 Working as an Senior Engineer in Schiphol offers a wide variety of challenges. Schiphol is a city of its own and that is reflected in the variety of data sources you’ll work with: ranging from radar data to web visits. Also, it is one of the few places in the Netherlands where you can literally look out of the window and see your software have direct impact.  

In terms of tooling we work on Azure. Some examples of components in our stack include Scala/Python, Airflow, Kafka, Kubernetes, Spark (Databricks).

Requirements:
  • You have a BSc or MSc in a relevant field (e.g. Computer Science, Mathematics etc.) 
  • You have at least 4 year of experience running data driven solutions, including deployment and management of data-pipelines in production. 
  • Strong Python/Scala experience, we would prefer someone with 2+ years hands-on experience with at least, one of this two.
  • Professional experience with Kafka (or Azure EventHub)
  • Professional experience with Spark, implementing both batch and streaming pipelines
  • You recognize the importance of logging and monitoring (we currently use Splunk, Open Telemetry)
  • You have at least one year experience with Microsoft Azure (AWS, GCP are fine too)
  • You are comfortable working with latest DevOps technologies i.e., Kubernetes, Docker;
  • Professional experience with Scrum
  • You are fluent in English.
  • Knowledge of the Dutch language is a plus!
